I work with children ages 6 and up who are struggling socially, academically, and/or at home.
Off-task Anger outbursts Noncompliant Low self-esteem Anxious Sad Poor boundaries Trauma Grief
Therapy begins with client-centered play to build the child’s self-esteem and allow free expression of thoughts and feelings; Once the child is comfortable and open, the play is combined with CBT to teach coping strategies, problem-solving, and social skills.
Parents are advised to participate in family sessions and/or private parent consultations as needed in order to transfer the techniques that will help their child succeed emotionally and behaviorally.
Why is play used in therapy?
Play is non-threatening and neutral.
Play is a reflection of the child’s feelings, thoughts, and experiences.
Play helps children process stress and gain a sense of control.
Play is a form of communication for children not yet ready to verbalize their thoughts and feelings.
Play provides a platform for modeling positive behaviors and practicing new roles in order to solve problems.
Children learn better by using hands-on activities than they do by just listening because their concentration level is increased, so they’re more likely to remember.
